US Patent 8187354 - Formation of nanofibrous filtration media
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/8187354.html
HVAC air filters made from microglass fibers and blends are brittle and can pose a health hazard. This patent from E.I. du Pont teaches using polymeric nanofibers to form air filters having the efficiency of microglass filters but without the health risk. Claim 1 reads:
1. A process for forming a composite fabric, comprising
electroblowing a web of polymeric nanofibers and a solvent therefor onto a moving support web comprising larger fibers spun from a material which is compatible with said nanofiber polymer, and
applying a vacuum pressure between about 4 mm H2O and 170 mm H2O to the combined webs to solvent-bond the nanofiber web to the support web.
