This patent from the University of Nebraska Medical Center teaches biodegradable polymer nanoparticles which may help prevent injuries due to head trauma, a stroke, or cardiac arrest. Claim 1 reads:

1. A method for inhibiting reperfusion injury in the brain comprising administering an effective amount of an antioxidant,

wherein said antioxidant is formulated in a biodegradable nanoparticle and administered via the carotid artery to a subject having cerebral ischemia,

said nanoparticle providing sustained release of said antioxidant, thereby inhibiting reperfusion injury in the brain of said subject.
