US Patent 7492458 - Surface plasmon resonance plasma display

Surface plasmon resonance is an effect which has often been used in the study of molecular and biological structures. This patent from a company called American Environmental Systems teaches an alternative application to achieve enhanced contrast and brightness of displays. Claim 1 reads:

1. A method of using nanoparticles in a display technology comprising steps of:

providing a nanoparticle capable to luminesce of characteristic spectral electromagnetic radiation when the nanoparticle is excited by a surface plasmon resonance source; and

exciting the nanoparticle by the surface plasmon resonance source to luminesce characteristic spectral electromagnetic radiation.
