US Patent 7495383 - Phosphor coated with quantum dots

One of the key advantages of quantum dots used in sensor and display applications is that the detection or emission wavelength can be tuned based on the particle size. However, using uniform size quantum dots in a colloidal system can result in too narrow a wavelength selectivity which is undesirable for some application such as a white light source. This patent from Avago Technologies teaches achieving a wider wavelength responsiveness by coating larger phosphor particles with the smaller quantum dots. Claim 1 reads:

1. A phosphor composition comprising:

first phosphor particles of a first size, said first phosphor particles of a first size converting light of an excitation wavelength to light having a first spectrum characterized by an intensity of light that varies as a function of wavelength, said first spectrum being independent of said size of said first phosphor particles; and

particles of a QD phosphor of a second size that convert light of said excitation wavelength to light having a QD phosphor spectrum characterized by an intensity of light that varies as a function of wavelength; wherein each of said first phosphor particles of a first size are coated with one or more of said particles of a QD phosphor of a second size.

This is another patent from Avago Technologies related to their work on the use of MEMS oscillators in spread spectrum communications. Claim 1 reads:

1. A spread-spectrum transmitter comprising:

microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based oscillation system comprising at least one MEMS resonator and being configured to generate signals at different frequencies; and

the MEMS based oscillation system further comprising a controllable switch configured to select one signal at a time within the MEMS-based oscillation system in response to a spread-spectrum code, the output from the controllable switch being a spread-spectrum signal.

US Patent 7318651 - Multicolor quantum dot flash module

Depending on the type of light source used for the flash from various cameras a different color tint may appear in the captured image. This patent from Avago Technologies teaches the use of quantum dots to produce red, green, and blue LEDs for a flash module to control the color temperature of the flash. Claim 14 reads:

14. A flash module comprising: a first light source emitting a first primary light and having a first wavelength-converting overlay disposed on the first light source providing a first color of light, the first wavelength-converting overlay including matrix material, and a first plurality of quantum dots dispersed in the matrix material; a second light source providing a second color of light; and a third light source providing a third color of light wherein the flash module mixes light from the first light source, the second light source, and the third light source to provide essentially white light.
