This patent from the University of California proposes a nanoscale mass spectroscopy system which may make it possible to integrate mass spectroscopy with lab-on-a-chip microfluidics. Claim 1 reads:

1. An electrospray emitter comprising:

a first silica nozzle extending out from a larger silica base tube;

wherein the walls of the nozzle and the base tube form a monolithic whole, and the first silica nozzle is a nanotube.
