US Patent 7645397 - Luminescent nanocrystal doped composites
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/7645397.html
This patent is from Nanosys and teaches the fabrication of nanocrystal composites to achieve high efficiency white light LEDs. Claim 1 reads:
1. A luminescent nanocomposite, comprising:
a population of luminescent nanocrystals, which nanocrystals are embedded in an epoxy, polyurea, or polyurethane matrix, and which nanocrystals substantially retain their luminescence when embedded in the matrix,
wherein a ligand is bound to a surface of a member nanocrystal, which ligand
a) comprises a dicarboxylic acid moiety that binds to the surface of the member nanocrystal or
b) is an aliphatic or polymeric amine comprising an amine moiety that binds to the surface of the member nanocrystal.
