US Patent 7109593 - Microsoft's Quantum Computer

Several US patents have issued (mostly to a company called D-Wave) for different strategies of quantum computing which uses, not just the 0's and 1's of ordinary computers, but rather an indeterminate state to facilitate parallel processing. This patent is (I think) the first US patent issued to Microsoft in this field.
1. A method for performing quantum computation, the method comprising: identifying a first quantum state of a lattice having a system of quasi-particles disposed thereon; moving the quasi-particles within the lattice according to at least one predefined rule; identifying a second quantum state of the lattice after the quasi-particles have been moved; and determining a computational result based on the second quantum state of the lattice.
